Osmosis Inspections

Osmosis, the tendency for a solvent when separated from a solution by a suitable membrane to pass through the membrane and dilute the solution.

For boat owners osmotic action within the hull laminate will result in blisters forming on the gelcoat.

During an osmosis inspection small areas of the underwater coatings are removed and the exposed laminate inspected for blistering or signs that moisture has been absorbed into the fibres beneath the gelcoat. Moisture readings are taken using a capacitance metre.

If blistering is found quite often the only cure is complete removal of the gelcoat and the application of a new moisture barrier.
